The Muscat grape (known in Spain as Moscatel) is thought to be the oldest cultivated grape variety on the planet and Spanish Moscatel has a long history stretching back thousands of years. The Moscatel variety is grown across Spain and the wines made from these grapes come in a range of styles from sweet to dry or somewhere in between. Traditional Moscatel Dulce is a sweet wine, made in a sherry-like style (fortified) in the south.
The casks we have supplied to us by our Spanish cooper Jose Miguel Martin were produced from American oak and then seasoned for a period of 2 years with fine Moscatel wine from just outside the city of Malaga, southern Spain. This 2-year period gives just enough time for the rich floral aromas of the wine to marry with the oak staves of the cask. Upon emptying, these casks were sent to Annandale where they were filled immediately upon arrival with peated and unpeated new make spirit.
Our expectations on flavour profile from whiskies out of these casks includes stewed apple, dates, hints of spice such as nutmeg and cloves, orange peel and almond. All a wonderful combination with our fruit driven peated and unpeated new make spirits.
